Today I will be showing you how to create a professional-looking lighting plan using Canva. As film lighting professionals, it is extremely important that we are able to communicate our creative vision through the use of visuals. We must present all of the technical details required in order for a location, a cast, and crew, and an entire production team to visualize what it is that we see, or in this case, what it is that we are trying to achieve, so they can help us bring our vision to life.
- The first step is to create an account on Canva if you don’t have one yet and don’t worry, the free version of Canva will do the trick. Now that it’s done, you can proceed to the next step:
- If you have already purchased the Lighting Diagram Toolkit, open the folder containing the assets and go to Canva;
- On Canva, click on ‘Create a Design‘, then ‘Custom Size‘, and you can choose the format you want, I personally use the 1920×1080 format
- Once created, go to the left side and find the ‘Folder‘ option, click on ‘Folder’ then click on ‘Create New’
- Name the folder, I named it ‘Lighting Diagram Toolkit’ but you can name it whatever you want.
- Now add all the assets in the lighting diagram toolkit to the new folder you just created in Canva.
- Once you’re done, Start designing your lighting plan by just doing drag and drop, and resizing. Be creative!
- Once you’re done, click on ‘Share‘ and choose the final format you prefer and that’s it. It’s easy for an enthusiast like you.
With the right tool, it is easy to make your lighting plan look as good as it reads. Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to creating an aesthetically pleasing, functional lighting plan for your filming.
