Inspired by a true story, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated feature films of 2023. Without further ado, discover everything you need to know about this future masterpiece signed by Martin Scorsese.
Born November 12, 1942, Martin Scorsese is undeniably one of the greatest filmmakers ever. This is evidenced by the multiple nominations and awards he has received throughout his long and brilliant career. Among the most prestigious awards won by this Hollywood heavyweight, we can notably mention the Best Director Oscar in 2007 for “The Departed.”
Also, several years earlier, in 1976, Martin Marcantonio Luciano Scorsese, his real name, shone at the Cannes Film Festival by winning the Palme d’Or for “Taxi Driver.” The proof? Approaching 81, the man who has always been critical of Marvel movies is deciding whether to retire. This year, he will be on the Cannes red carpet to present his latest feature film: “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
“Killers of the Flower Moon”: A historical drama
Indeed, it is official; the film will be screened out of competition during the 76th Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 16 to 27, 2023, and will be presided over by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness, The Square).
With a runtime of almost 4 hours, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the most extended works in Scorsese’s career, is a historical drama. Indeed, in the film based on David Grann’s best-selling book “The American Note,” the famous director takes us to America in the 1920s.
At that time, the war between European settlers and the U.S. government against Native American peoples had long since ended. However, the living conditions of the latter’s descendants were catastrophic, with most living in confined spaces in shelters. Left to their own devices, the survivors led a life of misery, which was far from the case for the members of the Osage tribe. Settled in the far reaches of Oklahoma, they showed a life opposite to that of their brethren. The reason was that they became extremely wealthy after an oil deposit was found on their vast territory. However, the established order within the community will be seriously undermined after a series of macabre events gradually decimate the population.
A 5-Star Cast
Poisoning, murder, explosives hidden in houses… a series of crimes deeply traumatized the wealthy Osage. Determined to solve them, a young officer named Edgar J. Hoover took charge of this dark case. In summary, the synopsis “Killers of the Flower Moon” will shed light on this dark episode in the history of the United States of America.
Excelling in storytelling on the big screen, Martin Scorsese decided to surround himself with the best to bring his latest creation to life. In “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the director indeed called upon two of his favorite actors to play the lead roles.
These are, of course, Hollywood legend Robert De Niro and the talented Leonardo DiCaprio. It is worth noting that both actors have worked with the filmmaker on several occasions. As for De Niro, he has appeared in films like “Taxi Driver,” “Mean Streets,” “Goodfellas,” and “Raging Bull,” which earned him the Best Actor Oscar in 1981, among others. “Killers of the Flower Moon” consequently marks the 11th collaboration between him and Scorsese. In the film, he plays William Hale, a wealthy ranch owner. As for DiCaprio, who shines in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” he portrays William’s nephew, Ernest Burkhart, married to a woman from the Osage community.
From Netflix to Apple TV+
Lily Gladstone, an actress of Native origins, notably plays the latter. As for the rest of the cast in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the audience will find Jesse Plemons, who in 2021 starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, his partner, in the very enigmatic “Power of the Dog.”
The historical drama, which promises to be superb with its staggering production budget of $200 million, will also feature Brendan Fraser, an Oscar winner from the last ceremony. The star of “The Whale” will play the role of W.S. Hamilton, a lawyer.
Filmed in Oklahoma, Martin Scorsese’s latest feature film will be released in cinemas in October 2023, but that’s not all. Indeed, since it is an Apple Original work, “Killers of the Flower Moon” will also be available on the Apple TV+ catalog. Thus, four years after “The Irishman,” produced by Netflix and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, Scorsese again teams up with streaming platforms.
It has not been relegated. Some behind-scenes images are available on social media. We can’t wait! According to DiCaprio’s words to Jacqueline West, the project’s costume designer, it would be a “masterpiece.”
