LUCY Lighting Setup
Hello and welcome to this very first episode of lighting Breakdown. In this section, we will analyze the lighting setup of your favorite films to learn a lot more about lighting and get inspired.
To start, today we’ll see how I copied a setup from the Lucy movie and then applied it to my video. Let’s go!
Last week I received a package that SmallRig sent me: Two SmallRig RC-220B and two SmallRig Softboxes (RA-D85). I haven’t used this type of light before, so I wanted to test it first.
Quick tips: It’s essential to test your equipment a few days before the actual shooting. You must, at all costs, know how to handle it to avoid problems that can cost you dearly on set.
To do this, I spent hours thinking about what kind of video I would shoot for the test, and that’s where the idea started, LUCY. I took a post that went viral on the Ci-Lovers Instagram page, and here is the result;
To do this, I used a reflector, and the SmallRig RC-220B set at 5000K as the Key Light, bouncing back on the reflector.
I didn’t have access to large silk to diffuse the sun, so we shot the scene behind a building.
For the hair light, I used the other SmallRig RC-220B at 2700K placed behind the actress to have this golden color on her hair, and I find it natural. I could have added a negative fill on the opposite side of the Keylight to have a little more contrast, but I found the image quite excellent and natural, so I left it like that.
And there you go! It was simple, and it didn’t take much, two lights and a reflector. Here’s the Diagram:
Bonus
Here’s a bonus! This time I tested the SmallRig’s Softbox, the RA-D85. This is a setup that you can use for a Commercial video or for music videos.
As you can see, I used the SmallRig RC-220B as a key light along with the Softbox RA-D85 to get that soft, and sweet light on my subject’s face.
For the Hair Light, I decided to place it in the direction of the sun to match the background light. It is always the same fixture, the SmallRig RC-220B at 2700K temperature to have this golden color on her hair. I used a negative fill not to add contrast, but because there is a pool on the left and I wanted to avoid any reflection. It’s pretty simple, but I like it.
